Brand Management

Deciding how StockEdge and elearnmarkets were allowed to sound. Content, email, WhatsApp, video and the app itself.

One voice, five surfaces

The same person is reached at different moments. Inside the app. In a newsletter on a Sunday. On WhatsApp when the market does something. In a video long enough that nobody opens it by accident.

Brand work at that scale is not a logo exercise. It is deciding what the company is allowed to say, then holding that line in five places that each impose a different constraint on how it can be said.

Securities markets and finance education have the same problem in a sharper form. The subject is money, so a sentence that overstates is not just off brand. It is a claim you cannot support.

What each surface takes away

The app takes space. There is no room for an argument, so only the claim survives, stated once. Content takes control, because the comment sits directly under the claim and answers it in public.

Email takes attention. One scroll before the decision, so what survives is the reason to open the next one. Video takes the opposite away. It hands over all the room in the world, and that is where a brand starts explaining itself and loses the line it walked in with.

WhatsApp takes distance. It sits next to family, so what survives is restraint. Sent rarely, or not at all. Anything that did not survive all five was never the brand. It was a campaign line.

Retail does not convert off an ad

Two heritage retail brands, MPJ Jewellers and Priya Gopal Bishoyi, through SVF Brands, the group's in-house agency.

Jewellery buyers do not convert off an ad. The entire function of the ad is to make one store the obvious one to walk into. That changes what the creative is for, and it changes what you are allowed to hold it to.

It also changes the honest measurement. The decision happens off platform, days later, in a room. So the work gets judged on revenue over a window, and on nothing the platform reports back in the first forty eight hours. A brand that buys attention it cannot convert is spending money to be liked.

Brand and paid run on the same rails

The pipeline that ships a brand film and the pipeline that ships a performance cut are the same pipeline. Same naming convention, same repository, same promo ID.

If brand assets do not carry attribution, the brand budget is unmeasurable by construction. It then gets defended with adjectives, and adjectives lose to a spreadsheet every time there is a cut to make.

So brand spend and paid spend get argued in the same currency. What went out, what came back, over what window. Brand is allowed a longer window. It is not allowed a different unit.

Where it stops working

A voice cannot fix a price, and it cannot fix a product that does not hold a new user. Brand work makes the right thing legible. When the thing underneath is wrong, consistency only makes the wrongness easier to recognise.

Consistency has a ceiling of its own. Held too tightly, a house voice flattens brands that should not sound alike, and a flat brand pays full price for its attention every time. A jewellery house and a securities markets platform cannot be run off one tone sheet, however tidy that would be.

And brand returns arrive slowly. On a monthly budget cycle there will be months where the honest answer is that the brand line cost money and has not returned it yet. Saying that out loud is what keeps the longer window credible the next time you ask for one.

Client work is described at the level of scope and outcome. The account detail belongs to the businesses.
